Arguably one of the most anticipated movies this holiday season, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theatres next Thursday, 15 December. Here are five things you should know about it.

1. It’s a prequel to A New Hope
Taking place after Episode III and before A New Hope, Rogue One centres around a band of rebels who plot to steal plans to the Death Star to destroy it. In other words, buckle down for a wild adventure with action and fight scenes galore.

Get up to speed on the movie before you watch it with Star Wars: Catalyst: A Rogue One Story. This paperback details the events of Rogue One in vivid detail. $25.56, usual price $31.95.

2. It’s got a new cast
New movie, new cast. As beloved as they are, we won’t see favourites like Han Solo, Princess Leia or Chewbacca returning. The main character is soldier Jyn Erso, who leads the rebellion to infiltrate the enemy forces, and she’s helped by rebel fighters Captain Cassian Andor, Chirrut Imwe, Baze Malbus, Bodhi Rook and droid K-2SO. Stepping into the villain’s shoes is the scheming Director Orson Krennic, who heads weapons research for the Empire.

3. It’s the first Star Wars film without the opening crawl
It might seem strange for the movie to drop the iconic space crawl, but there’s a good reason behind the decision. Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy explained in an interview with Variety, “We felt that’s so indicative of what those saga films are,” and hinted that the film will likely open “with just the title.”

4. It’s darker than previous films
Rogue One has been called a “war movie” and “heist”, no doubt due to its plot about fighters embarking on a dangerous mission. But this being a Star Wars film, you can be sure there will be the requisite light-hearted moments and humorous touches to balance out the grittiness.

5. It’s got a familiar character
That tall ominous figure in black, that distinctive helmet, that deep breathing – it could only be Darth Vader. According to Kennedy, Darth Vader’s role will be small but significant, and while it’s anybody’s guess when he shows up in the movie, one thing is certain: he sure knows how to make an entrance.
