The jobs of the future

When it comes to predicting the future, none of us has the perfect crystal ball. Yet, educators, visionaries and thought leaders of global companies agree on this: STEAM skills are going to be in high demand in the future.

In the US, STEAM jobs are expected to grow by 26 per cent this decade, according to the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. This is second only to the healthcare industry, which will see a 31 per cent jump in jobs over the same period.

This jobs growth is not confined to Silicon Valley and its clones – as technology revolutionises industrial and commercial processes, there will be an increasing need for STEAM skill-equipped workers to mediate the gap between robots and the rest of us. Take the growth of the driverless car market, for example. While there might no longer be a need for long haul truckers, there will be a need for programmers, logisticians, service workers, communications experts and more.

In other words, every job of the future will become a STEAM job. Even if you don’t work in technology directly, you will need those STEAM skills of collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and communication. “We’re living in transformational times, and if your job description isn’t already changing, it probably will in the near future,” said Daniel Burrus, a leading tech strategist in a written piece for the Huffington Post.

Here are our top STEAM career picks of the future.

AI programmer
Think you could create the next Alexa or Siri? Artificial intelligence is the next big wave and companies are going to need skilled programmers who can surf it. Careers in this field promise endless opportunities and room for growth.

Nano-medic
Nano-technology is the medicine of the future, as tiny, microscopic treatments revolutionise healthcare. Imagine a tiny particle that can travel deep within a human body, delivering critical drugs to hard-to-reach areas, or a tiny robot that can perform delicate surgery, thus eliminating the need for big, invasive procedures.

Virtual reality designer
Augmented or virtual reality is going to be a much bigger part of our lives – and STEAM graduates will be well-positioned to design, program and sculpt our virtual existence. Your child might be obsessed with Minecraft, but it could well be his on-ramp into a VR career designing virtual houses, personal companions, games and more.

Engineering and hospitality jobs driven by space tourism
Space X and Virgin Galactic are already testing sub-orbital space tourism – space resorts or holidays to the moon might be just around the corner. This industry is going to need space tour guides, rocket engineers, lunar architects and more – all of whom will need to be experts in both technology and arts.

We are at the dawn of a new age. It is impossible to predict with certainty what careers will look like in 50 years, but we owe it to our children to start imagining what the future will look like, and how they can play an active and engaged part in it.
